Meet our Mentors

Mark and Janet.

Both of us have been involved in the helping profession for over 30 years.  We have also been living in Crystal Lake for over 20 years.  In 2011 we had an idea of giving back to the community as a family.  The idea of Music Mentors was born, thanks to the support and efforts of our children. We are thrilled we can offer this program to the community and share our passion for music.

Jacob:

Jacob Myers has been addicted to music for nearly 15 years, and has been playing the trumpet for 10 years. He is a third-year Music Education major at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside, and graduated from Crystal Lake South High School in 2015. He has been involved with Music Mentors since the program began in 2013, and helps out with the administrative and organizational stuff behind the scenes. This year, he’ll also be one of the mentors that runs the Music Mentors Jazz Jams/Workshops. Outside of music, Jacob loves playing video games, watching movies, reading comic books, and other nerdy things. Just don’t bring up Spider-Man. Once he starts talking about that, it’s hard to stop him.

Mark:

I am going to be a second-year music education major at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and attended Crystal Lake South under Mr. Christopher Keyes and Mr. Cody Halberstadt. In high school, I was a part of almost every ensemble, including all levels of band, both jazz bands, the marching band, the pep band, and the pit orchestra. I carried over my passion for music to university, where I have been a part of UW-Whitewater’s Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Band, Warhawk Marching Band, and Trombone Ensemble.  I have been playing the trombone since fifth grade, and I bring knowledge of trombone pedagogy and literature to my students. I have a large repertoire of trombone at my disposal, and I am familiar with all the standard orchestral trombone pieces and excerpts. I am constantly looking for ways to work and volunteer in the field of music. This has involved volunteering as a part of Crystal Lake South’s band staff as a librarian, working for UWW’s music department as librarian, as well as previous experience with the Music Mentors program. And finally, attached is a picture. I am looking forward to working with the mentees.

Jesse:

For flute:
I’ve played flute and piccolo in school band for seven years (since fifth grade). In addition, I have taken private lessons alongside these seven years, performing in numerous recitals. I am currently in the highest placing band at my high school, the wind ensemble, in which I earned placement as a sophomore. Before that, I sat second chair in the next highest band, symphonic band. Outside of school, I sat third chair at the McHenry County Youth Orchestra and played first part in a flute choir consisting of three other members.
For voice:
I have been singing in school choir for five years, alternating between singing soprano and alto voice parts. I have been taking private lessons for three years at multiple different locations. At the first place I took voice lessons, Music Makers for Life, I sang lead vocals in a teen band and performed with them and as a soloist at many different recitals. With my current voice teacher, Emily Robles, I participated in a Chicagoland competition called NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing). In addition to this, I have also performed in numerous musicals both in school and outside of school. Of the six musicals I participated in, I had a featured singing role in three. My skills include singing high notes in the soprano range and lyrical musical theater songs, but I am very flexible with other people’s interests.
Aside from music, I enjoy learning about STEM, and I plan on pursuing a career in Nursing. I also volunteer in the community and at school through NHS.

Nate:
Hi, my name is Nate Myers! I have been playing trumpet in Crystal Lake schools since 5 th grade. Over the course of my musicianship I have picked up many instruments. Although my main focus is French Horn, Guitar, and Voice, I am also dexterous in all instruments in the brass family and String Bass. I have been a Music Mentor for two years on Voice, Baritone, and anywhere else I am needed. I will be one of the leaders of the Tuesday Jazz Jam/workshop. As an incoming Junior at CLS, I am a member of the Madrigals (top choir in the school) as a bass and Acapella Choir. My voice tessitura lies in the baritenorrange and I am able to mentor on all male parts.

Olivia:

Hello! My name is Olivia and next fall I will be a senior at Crystal Lake Central High School. I have played piano for 10 years. In that time, I have participated in events like Sonatina Festivals where I am judged based on my performance, and group events like the 5 Grands where I play duets with 4 other pairs. I also have experience playing piano and performing solos for the jazz band at my school. In addition to piano, I play varsity volleyball for Central and club volleyball in the offseason. I participate in various clubs and activities such as NHS and Newspaper at my school as well.
